Exquisite Corpse Show North/South Galleries View the postcards Opening Reception There will be an interactive "artists' table" at the reception for gallery visitors to make ECs with the artists; everyone is welcome. More than 25 artists of all backgrounds and disciplines come together to create surrealist-inspired “exquisite corpses” – collaboratively made art pieces. The show includes work spanning from the more traditional drawings and paintings on paper to animation, sculpture, film, and more. Organized by California College of the Arts student Nancy Chan, the show is a celebration of both the individual and collaborative effort. An open artist call was announced in late spring, inviting artists of all disciplines and backgrounds to come together and make work. Over 25 people, composed of students, graduates, friends, and family, answered the call and met regulaly during the summer. The participants come from various disciplines, including ceramics, photography, and film, forming a collaborative bond that results in a diverse collection of work. Every piece was just as much of a surprise to the artists as they will be to the viewers, bringing a much-needed fun air to the traditional gallery show. Artists (partial list): How-tos: Contact: |
card artwork by (top-bottom) "Exquisite Corpse (or Exquisite cadaver) is a method by which a collection of words or images are collectively assembled, the result being known as the exquisite corpse or cadavre exquis in French. It is a technique used by surrealists, and is based on an old parlour game called Consequences in which players wrote in turn on a sheet of paper, folded it to conceal a part of the writing, and then passed it to the next player for a further contribution." |
