The euroisation, in this work is intended has the further economic effects and political implications of the introduction of the single currency for the European Civil Society`s political and economic debate. It is belive that behind the euro, the people of Europe will have a pragmatically stronger awareness of the common ground in which their social, political and cultural lifes are inter-related and inter-connected. The European citizen (Art. 17 EC Treaty) can directly elect the members of the European Parliament; he has the right of petition; he is entitled to take individual action before the European Court of Justice and he can contribute to the European and thus regional development by adhering to the organs of a civil society, like trade unions, NGOs, voluntary charitable associations and foundations responsible for establishments and services. Their co-operation with the European Commission is explicitly highlighted in Declaration N° 23 in the annex of the Maastricht Treaty. |
European Civil Society needs a public sphere: a critical mass of concerned citizens who discuss issues, support policy as a precondition for a responsible European public authority. |
The "Observatoire social européen" (OSE), founded in 1984, is an information and research centre focusing on the social aspects of European integration. Its aim is to provide - especially trade unionists, researchers, politicians, officials, journalists and students - analytical data and critical comment relating to the European Unionís activities and policies for a wide readership. The OSE works in three areas in particular : institutional matters generally, social policy and citizenship, Economic and Monetary Union (EMU). An academic scientific committee carefully monitors the quality of the work of the OSE. |

The European Economic and Social Committee (ESC) is a forum where the various socio-economic organisations in the Member States of the European Union are represented. The ESC is a consultative assembly which is part of the European Union's institutional system and so provides a link between Europe and civil society. |
