Fencing History:

Hector's older brother, Jorge de la Torre had been inviting 15 yr. old Hector to try fencing, but Hector's first love, surfing was always drawing him down to the water. Hector had watched Jorge training for over a year with coach Charles Randall and noticed his fast success, passion for the sport and the camaraderie of the saber team. After discussing it in depth with Jorge, he finally in Sept. 2003 decided to give it a shot.

Following the great example set by Jorge, Hector trained consistently and with great focus. He found he truly loved the sport, and decided to sell his surfing equipment so he could buy his fencing equipment. Soon Hector was fencing 6 days a week and found himself constantly thinking about fencing, and arranging his time so he could take as many private classes as possible during the day after school, then with the group at night. He wanted to be able to enter the Nov. Men's Cadets saber competition and worked towards his goal with intense focus.

In Nov. 2003, Hector entered his first competition, in his age category of cadets and placed #7 national and #2 in the state. After his third competition, Hector had solidified his place on the state Jr. Olympic team by finishing #2 overall in the state over the series of 3 competitions. May 2004 - Hector went to the 2004 National Jr. Olympics in Tijuana and brought home the silver medal for the men's saber team event.

Oct. 2004, Hector wins his first individual medal, silver at the Nationals- Men's cadet category. Then in Dec. at the second nationals he wins his first individual Gold medal, taking his ranking to #1 in men's cadet in the country.

Jan. 2005 at the 3rd Nationals in the series, Hector wins the silver medal and retains the #1 ranking. In Feb. at the last of the series, the national championships Hector clearly dominates and wins the gold medal and the title of National Champion and the #1 ranked Cadet male saber fencer in the country.

May 2005 - National Jr. Olympics in Cancun: Hector blazes his way to the Gold, undefeated all day and wins the gold 15-4, clearly dominating the field. Later in the week he leads the state team of Jalisco to the team gold medal.
