The focus is always on George, but what of Mike Nicholls - the guy he has worked with for so many years, who could undoubtedly sell so many tabloid stories? "People sometimes assume that I'm perhaps George's stylist and advisor but, as we both know, George is totally in control of how he looks and the messages he wishes to convey. Although I do consider myself to be a major influence in his life, and vice versa, our relationship is much more an exchange of ideas on many levels and I believe this is what makes the work we do together a unique situation," says Mike Nicholls at his Hoxton Square flat, cutely decorated with Daleks and giant prints of bugs.
"My working relationship with George is unique in that he is full of ideas himself and also likes to be hands-on in the creation of a look. It used to be more the case that we'd go out together and choose fabrics 'n' stuff, discuss what he'd like, and I would go away and make it. Now, more often than not, he'll buy a jacket and customize it himself, or I'll take it over at some stage and add beading. So we don't ever meet to discuss a new look, it's very organic and things just seem to happen."
