| 2-25-68 THE CHICAGO SHOWS - Odd recording, not soundwise, but heavily edited. Don't know why it's edited,but it's a decent recording and a pretty rare show to have. This CD is approx. 28 min. 1968 BY HIMSELF - This CD will educate you greatly on the music of Jimi Hendrix. Sourced as an "extra" in a Hendrix book, this is not really considered a bootleg. You get just as the title suggests, Jimi by himself. A very good sounding recording of Hendrix basically just forming, and practicing new songs in front of a mic. You can hear him go through his papers in between each song, as he had a habit of writing lots of lyrics and notes on many different sheets of paper. Great, great showcase of the vocal ability of Jimi Hendrix, which is widely overlooked. You might not rock out to these songs, but they are more of a learning experience into the mind of Jimi Hendrix. Approx. 45 min. 2-3-68 WINTERLAND - My early, but not official review is that this is certainly not as good of a show as the later October Winterland performances. The sound is not as good as I expected and this show leaves something to desire. 4-17-68 CAFE A GO GO - Most likely the date is correct, but I still have my doubts. There are too many of these shows circulating around for me to be sure. 5-30-68 HALLENSTADION - YET ANOTHER OVERLOOKED SHOW IN MY OPINION. THESE RARE EUROPEAN RECORDINGS FROM MID-1968 ARE PROVING TO BE QUITE COLLECTABLE. THIS SHOW FEATURES REALLY GOOD SOUND CONSIDERING THE TIME AND PLACE. ONE HAS TO WONDER IF "VOODOOO CHILD" WAS PLAYED PUBLICLY FOR THE VERY FIRST TIME HERE. IT'S QUITE POSSIBLE CONSIDERING THIS SONG WAS NOT IN THE SET FOR THE "BOLOGNA" SHOW (NOTED FOR HORRIBLE SOUND) ONLY 4 DAYS PRIOR. "VOODOO" IS ALSO THE OPENING NUMBER FOR THIS SHOW AND MR.HENDRIX WAS KNOWN QUITE OFTEN TO OPEN UP HIS LIVE ACTS WITH NEW SONGS, WHETHER IT BE HIS OWN OR SOMEBODY ELSES. ALSO OF NOTE IS THE HECTIC CROWD IN WHICH "STONE FREE" IS DELETED 2 MINUTES INTO THE SONG. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. 8-4-68 HOUSTON - Seems to be missing a great performance in this show. I hear the same "old" songs being performed here, although it was standard at the time for Hendrix. Nothing spectacular. Sound is also dissapointing. 8-8-68 DALLAS - INTERESTING OPENING NUMBER AS JIMI PERFORMS "DEAR MR. FANTASY." ABOVE AVERAGE SOUND AND ALTHOUGH ONLY 2 OR 3 OF MY PERSONAL FAVORITES ARE PERFORMED YOU CANNOT OVERLOOK THIS SHOW. 8-11-68 DAVENPORT - Very good "Are You Experienced" to open up the show. Although this may be a tough find, do not overlook this show, it is secretly one of the better performances from the '60's. Sound is above average, with the sheer volume of Jimi's guitar making it quite easy to listen to. 9-14-68 HOLLYWOOD BOWL - Very long "are you experienced" in the opening. for you hendrix fan's or newbies to his music, you might want to pay close attention to this show. it's widely regarded that during this period in late '68 hendrix' music and in particulary his guitar style clearly changed. there were technical reasons which may be too numerous to mention, but regardless this show enters you into a more "voodoo" period in hendrix' career. and on the same note this show contains a very early version of "voodoo child." noteworthy not only for the history, but the show stands up as first rate. somewhat listenable aud4, sounds like you're actually on stage. 11-2-68 MINNEAPOLIS - SONGS ARE VERY HEAVILY EDITED AND BETWEEN 1-3 MINUTES IN LENGTH. THIS DOES APPEAR TO BE HOW THE ORIGINAL RECORDING TOOK PLACE. IT DOES HAVE 2 INTERVIEWS WITH JIMI IN THE BEGINNING AND END OF THE CD. BESIDES THE HISTORY OF HENDRIX, THIS CD IS VERY POOR AND STUPIDLY EDITED. AVOID UNLESS YOU ARE A STRICT COLLECTOR. 11-28-68 ELECTRIC THANKSGIVING - sad that there's only 3-4 songs to this CD, all are superb. song for song, maybe the best '68 show. 11-30-68 DETROIT - This CD may or may not be in it's complete form, but what we have here is still very good. Very acceptable audience recording and there are 2 songs taken from a slightly different (better) source than the others. 1-4-69 BBC SESSIONS - A somewhat easy to find television show, this only contains about 3 numbers. The story about how Jimi quickly changes the pace at the end of the show to include "Sunshine" at the last moment is well known. He did this sudden Instrumental jam to avoid a "duo" with the show's host, Lulu. Pretty nice version of "Voodoo" sounds like the opening to a newer version of this song from the previous year. Of course sound is perfect; this comes from an Official Release. 1-13-69 COLOGNE - A SUPRISE TO FIND THIS GOOD OF SOUND QUALITY IN THE '69 EUROPE SHOWS. THE JIMI HENDRIX WEBSITE REFERS TO THE DOUBLE BILLING BETWEEN JIMI AND "EIRE APPARANT". 2 SHOWS WERE PERFORMED ON THIS DAY. 1-14-69 MUNSTER - There's quite a bit of distortion in the sounds during the loud parts of the show, depending on your ears this can be annoying. The show is quite worthy of being collectible however, with a seering version of "Red House" in the opening number. Hendrix pushes this song to the limit and just refuses to let this one end until he has explored all of the sounds. 1-17-69 BURNING AT FRANKFURT - excellent version of red house, good sound - good aud4. for some reason the last song and a half has interference. don't know yet if it's from the master. 4-26-69 LIVE AT THE L.A. FORUM - This show features long jams and great recording quality. This was CD#4 in the Hendrix box set, Lifelines. The set was originally a radio show with interviews between the songs, and a brief biography. Highlights include "Spanish Castle Magic, Tax Free, and an amazing version of Voodoo Child. This certainly must be considered one of the best "Experience" shows ever. During the end of "Voodoo" the management actually turns off the PA system because the crowd kept rushing the stage. During this time, you can barely make out Hendrix's vocals for a few seconds; he realized this problem and put in some nice guitar riffs instead. 4-27-69 LIVE IN OAKLAND - An official Dagger records (Hendrix Family Release). Pretty good sound that was re-mixed by Jimi's engineer from 1968-1970, Eddie Kramer. This show features extended versions of many songs including an 10 minute version of "Foxey Lady", and an 18 minute version of "Voodoo Child." Jack Cassidey appears as a special guest for the number. "Hey Joe" is also interesting as it features many more lyrics than the usual performance. It is almost certain that Hendrix only put in these new extended lyrics for this show only. Very good show to have. 5-3-69 MAPLE LEAF GARDENS - Of all of the controversy surrounding Hendrix in Toronto, not too much has to do with the show. As a matter of fact, it is forgotten in a way. In between Hendrix's drug bust in Toronto, he provided a stellar show. This was a period of experimentation and "long jams" with the JHE- it is very easy to hear the change of pace. Take note of the Jazzy/Voodoo Style of "Room Full of Mirrors", its is done quite well. 9-5-69 HARLEM BLACK ASSOC. STREET FAIR - This only contains about 3 songs, none of them are audible. The sound is horrible, and quite possibly the worst you will ever come across. I would advise not listening to this unless you want a headache. This is only listed for the puposes of completing my collection. The show actually takes place in Harlem, on 139th/Lennox Ave. 12-31-69 BOX OF GYPSYS - Many many recordings of these shows exist, and for a good reason. This is a 6-CD set of all 4 of the performances on New Years Eve/Day 1970. The sound is certainly a straight soundboard at times, but it also sounds like an audience mic is mixed in at times. All things considered, this is probably the best way to enjoy these shows exactly as they were performed. The highlights are numerous and too many to mention. Obviously "Machine Gun" from these shows are some of the best recordings of all times. Interesting to see how even though he performs the same song sometimes, it rarely seems to be played the same way twice. "Stone Free" is my favorite from this set, it's also on "Hendrix: Live at the Fillmore", an Official release. 1-28-70 MADISON SQUARE GARDEN - This is only listed for collection purposes. This one and a half song set, is quite popular. This of course is the show where Jimi was obviously too "sick" (from drugs) to perform and he walks off the stage just at the end of "Earth Blues." The worst playing you will ever hear from Hendrix, really bad show. 4-25-70 LIVE AT THE L.A. FORUM - I have reworked the Original version, and my version has all songs on 2-CD's in seperate tracks, the original is not great at splitting songs into tracks. The original album is widely held as the best bootleg ever of Jimi Hendrix and one of the finest bootlegs of all time. It is not the best for it's quality, which is an okay AUD4, it is the best for the material in the show itself. This is a legendary performance, and ranks up there with any Hendrix show. All songs are performed great, but 3 stick out for me as being aboslutely wonderful. "Hear My Train Comin" seemed to gain strength the more Hendrix played this song. There is a huge difference from his 1968 performances of this song to the later 1970's versions. This song is equal to or above what is considered to be the most perfect performance Hendrix's blues; his performance of this song in Berkeley. "The New Rising Sun" also takes shape as sometimes even Hendrix had trouble interpreting this song live on stage. This version works, and it is a jewel. "Freedom" was performed here for the very first time by Jimi Hendrix and it is one of my favorites. Hendrix grooves into this song with a great R&B style that really kicks this song off quite nice. The 2-CD show also features filler from various shows such as his "Walk Off" performance of 2 songs with the Band of Gypsys in Madison Square Garden. It's interesting to listen to, but Hendrix is obviously sick and not together, you can hear it in his words and music. After 2 songs, this show was cancelled. The other filler is from September 2, 1970 in Denmark and June 13, 1970 in Baltimore. These are above average, specially "Straight Ahead" from Baltimore. This Hendrix CD represents my favorite Bootleg of all time. 5-30-70 BERKELEY - Both shows complete are in this great double-CD. Official recordings are available for many of the songs from the 2 shows, but it is slightly rare to find this package with the whole shows complete. The quality of this recording is excellent, and although it may sound different, it is very comparable and just as good as an Official recording. The first show features an amazing version of "Johnny B. Goode." I don't really know how many times he performed this live, but I am certain it was only a few. This show contains the excellent "Hear My Train Comin", which is widely regarded as Hendrix's greatest performance of the blues ever performed live. There are also a few downfalls to this CD, but they are to be expected. A few songs, specially in the second show, just do not sound right. Pay close attention to the intro of "The New Rising Sun." Hendrix absolutely nails the intro, but towards the end it looses it's feel. Also this 2-Disc Set with BOTH Shows from the evening seem to be edited for content as the audience sound is edited in between each song. Seems to possibly be the way this CD was made in order to fit one show each onto the CD's. I would not confuse this with a "Non-DAO" recording as that does not seem to be the case. The good with the bad, this is a must have for your collection. 6-27-70 BOSTON GARDENS - Real good wah-wah solo on "Red House" - this just may be my favorite version of all time. Jimi does not take 10 or 12 minutes with "Red House" as compared to the others. Because of this it is more up-tempo and just may have a bit more energy to it. Also of note is a rare performance of "All Along The Watchtower" - much appreciated by me. 7-4-70 STAGES - AN "OFFICIAL" CD RELEASED BY REPRISE AS A 4-CD SET CALLED, "STAGES." AN EXCELLENT COMPILATION, BUT MAYBE NOT FOR THE AVID COLLECTOR. THE SOUND IS HOWEVER, NEARLY PERFECT. I HAVE HEARD MANY AUDIO SOURCES FROM THIS DATE AND THEY ALL DEPICT AN ODD HENDRIX TONE, QUITE POSSIBLY OUT OF TUNE. BEYOND THE LESS THAN AVERAGE GUITAR SOUND, THERE ARE GOOD, NOT GREAT PERFORMANCES. AN ODD ROOM FULL OF MIRRORS, AND GOOD VOODOO CHILD MAKE THIS ABOVE AVERAGE. PURPLE HAZE MAY JUST BE THE BEST FROM THIS CD. 7-17-70 MESSAGE OF LOVE - A VERY GOOD "RED HOUSE" IS HERE, BUT NOT TOO MUCH ELSE TO COMMENT ON. THERE ARE COMPILATIONS IN WHICH MUCH BETTER AUDIO CAN BE FOUND FROM THIS SHOW, BUT THEY ARE OFTEN (1) SONG FEATURES. 7-26-70 GOOD MAKES, BOY - JIMI'S RETURN TO HIS HOMETOWN OF SEATTLE. I DON'T SEE THAT MUCH INTREST IN THIS SHOW, IT COULD BE BECAUSE OF THE BAD SOUND. 7-30-70 INTO THE CLOUNDS-RAINBOW BRIDGE - IN RECENT TIMES GREAT AUDIO HAS COME FROM THESE SHOWS (THERE WERE 2 SHOWS). THIS VERSION HAS VERY GOOD SOUND, ALTHOUGH MAYBE JUST A TAD BIT TOO "CLOSE" ON THE SOUNDBOARD. WHAT YOU GET HERE IS SOME RARE MATERIAL AND RE-WORKING OF SONGS, MIXED IN WITH MEDIOCRITY. I AM A BIG FAN OF "THE NEW RISING SUN" HERE AND THE "VOODOO CHILD" JAM. CERTAINLY ABOVE AVERAGE. NOT SURE ABOUT THE EXACT TITLE OF THE CD AS THIS VERSION CONTAINS FILLER AT THE END OF DISC 2. 8-30-70 ISLE OF WIGHT(REPRISE) - AN OFFICIAL "EUROPEAN" RELEASE WHICH IS INCOMPLETE AND EDITED, BUT STILL VERY COLLECTABLE. THE INCLUSION OF "THE NEW RISING SUN" IS WONDERFUL, ALTHOUGH IT HAS BEEN PLAYED BETTER. 8-30-70 FOR THE QUEEN - MORE OF A BOOTLEG SOUNDBOARD COMPARED TO THE OTHER, BUT STILL VERY GOOD. THIS THE COMPLETE SHOW AND THERE ARE A LOT OF SONGS NOT HEARD ON ANY VERSION VIDEO OR CD. TAKE NOT OF THE ULTRA RARE "MIDNIGHT LIGHTNING" - THIS HAD TO BE THE ONLY TIME THIS WAS PERFORMED LIVE. ALTHOUGH CLEARLY IN IT'S WORKING STAGES, THIS SONG HAD POTENTIAL. WHEN LISTENING TRY TO CATCH THE MANY AMPLIFIER PROBLEMS HENDRIX HAD-THEY LASTED THE ENTIRE SHOW. "ALL ALONG THE WATCHTOWER, MACHINE GUN, VOODOO CHILD" RANK AS DO NOT MISSES. 8-31-70 GUITAR IN THE GARDEN - CURRENTLY NO REVIEW EXCEPT IT CLEARLY DOES NOT MEASURE UP TO THE PREVIOUS NIGHT AT THE ISLE OF WIGHT. MORE TO COME. 9-2-70 ARHURUS - Again, this is not the complete show, only 3 songs featured here, but they are noteworthy. Pretty up-tempo version of "Freedom" is quite nice. Still searching for the entire show which is not as readily available. 9-4-70 BACK TO BERLIN - FALSE "RISING SUN" INTRO BEFORE "STRAIGHT AHEAD." ALTHOUGH VERY LISTENABLE, SOUND DOES DISTORT AT THE HIGH NOTES AND MAKES YOU WONDER IF JIMI'S GUITAR SOUNDED LIKE THAT DURING THE SHOW. INTERESTING ARRANGEMENT OF "SUNSHINE" WHICH IS PERFORMED SOLO INSTEAD OF A RUN-INTO AFTER SPANISH CASTLE OR PURPLE HAZE. MORE OF A JAZZY FEEL TO "SUNSHINE" AND IT WORKS WELL. ALTHOUGH LISTED AS AN AUDIENCE RECORDING, IT MUST AT THE VERY LEAST BE A HYBRID SOUNDBOARD / AUDIENCE RECORDING THE GUITAR SOUNDS TOO PERFECT AT TIMES AND THERE IS HARDLY ANY CROWD NOISE. AMAZING "MACHINE GUN" WITH WHAT MUST BE THE ONLY "MACHINE GUN/PURPLE HAZE/RED HOUSE" PERFORMED TOGETHER AS A TRIO. 9-16-70 WITH ERIC BURDON & WAR - NOT FAMILIAR WITH ERIC BURDON, BUT EXCEPT FOR A FEW NOTES, NEARLY ALL SONGS MUST BE FROM ERIC BURDON. ONLY OF INTEREST TO ME FOR THE SIMPLE FACT THAT THIS IS THE LAST RECORDING OF HENDRIX EVER. NOT A REAL FAN OF THE SHOW THAT SEEMS MOSTLY LIKE JAMMING TO ME. SOUND IS NOT GOOD. others: (LOOSE ENDS / MIDNIGHT LIGHTNING / CRASH LANDING - 1973 to 1975) FOR THOSE OF YOU NOT TOO FAMILIAR WITH THESE ALBUMS, A FEW WORDS. THESE ALBUMS WERE PUT OUT AFTER JIMI'S DEATH BY PRODUCER/ENGINEER ALAN DOUGLAS. WHAT IS IMPORTANT TO KNOW IS THAT ALL 3 OF THESE ALBUMS FEATURE RE-WORKING AND RE-RECORDING (WITH STUDIO MUSICIANS POST HENDRIX) OF SOME GREAT MATERIAL. WHAT IS SIMPLE TO UNDERSTAND IS THAT MOST PEOPLE AROUND JIMI WERE AGAINST THESE RELEASES, ESPECIALLY HIS FAMILY. THESE ALBUMS SHOULD BE LOOKED AT AS CONTROVERSIAL. YOU CAN FIND 90% OF ALL THESE SONGS IN THEIR ORIGINAL FORM ON AN OFFICIAL HENDRIX FAMILY RELEASE. VARIOUS DATES '67 - RIGHT NOW THIS IS AN UNKNOWN COMPILATION. HAS VERY GOOD PERFORMANCES AND GOOD SOUND TO MATCH FROM VARIOUS 1967 SHOWS. PRETTY DECENT AND WORTHWHILE. BEFORE THE FILLMORE - A GOOD COMPILATION OF THE PRE-FILLMORE CONCERTS FROM NYE 1970. THIS CD INCLUDES REHEARSALS FROM BAGGIE'S IN NEW YORK RECORDED WITH EDDIE KRAMER'S MOBILE UNIT IN LATE DECEMBER 1969. A FEW TRACKS WERE ARE ALSO RECORDED AT THE RECORD PLANT IN 1969. 51ST ANNIVERSARY (THE STORY OF LIFE) - WOW, WHAT A COLLECTION. THIS HAS TO BE THE BEST STUDIO/LIVE BOX SET OUT THERE. HAS A BIT OF EVERYTHING. RAINY DAY SESSIONS - PRETTY GOOD LOOK AT SOME OF THE STUDIO OUTTAKES FROM 67-68. MOST ARE PROBABLY FROM THE "ELECTRIC LADYLAND" ALBUM. THESE RECORDINGS DO SHOW THEIR AGE A BIT, BUT STILL A SOLID SB5 OR SB6. OF THE MANY STUDIO OUTTAKE COLLECTIONS AVAILABLE, THIS IS CERTAINLY ABOVE AVERAGE. THE LAST ARCHIVES - THE NAME PRETTY MUCH SAYS IT ALL. I BELIEVE THE LAST EVER INTERVIEW FROM JIMI HENDRIX IS HERE, ALONG WITH HIS LAST EVER LIVE GIG. PRETTY INTERESTING. |
