What is a Doula?

Doula is a Greek word meaning "woman caregiver of another woman", and has recently been used to describe professional labor companions who support women before, during and after the birth of their babies.

Women have complex needs during childbirth. In addition to the safety of obstetrical care, and the love and companionship of their partners, women need continuous reassurance, comfort, encouragement and respect. They need individualized care based on their preferences and circumstances. The role of the Doula encompasses the non-clinical aspects of care during childbirth, and to help families achieve what they define as a positive birth and nuture that experience.
