How long has Enid Writers Club been around? Our organization was founded in 1923 by Professor Roi J. Wolfinger of Phillips University.

What kinds of people are in the club? Will I fit in? We usually have 25-40 people per year. Generally, 50% or more of our members are present for each meeting.

EWC members write for fun, for profit, or on the job. Some used to write but don’t anymore, while others have a desire to get started! Our group encompasses all age groups, skill levels, and genres. You do NOT have to be published to join; you don’t even have to want to be published. You simply have to share our passion for writing and want to learn more about all aspects of it.

EWC is an affiliated member of the Oklahoma Writer’s Federation, Inc., and we encourage our members to join the state group if possible.

When do you meet? We meet the first Thursday of the month from September – June, then break for summer in July and August. Meetings are held in the Cherokee Strip Conference Center Heritage Room (except May and June). We begin promptly at 6:30 PM and usually finish by about 8:30.

When the roll is called, members can either announce their presence or take the opportunity to read something they’ve written on a designated topic. (You’ll find more about Roll Call in the yearbook.) We then have either a speaker or an activity that is writing-related, followed by a short business meeting.

In May, we hold a catered awards banquet to announce the winners of our annual writing contest. At our last meeting of the year in June, we have a catered indoor picnic.

How much does it cost to be a member? Dues are $15.00 per year (Sept. – Sept.) Your dues help defray the cost of a meeting room, speakers, an annual yearbook, a monthly newsletter, and much more. We don’t pro-rate the dues for people joining mid-season, but we’ll do our best to ensure that you get your money’s worth!

How do I join? We call it "Reading for Membership.” All we ask is that you read something you’ve written: a poem, a short essay, an article – anything at all – as long as it is no longer than 3-typewritten, double spaced pages. An officer will then contact you about joining, usually before the meeting ends. We don’t judge your talent or your topic, but hearing a prospective member read helps the officers determine what types of programs or speakers will help our group most. Once invited to join, simply pay your $15 and we’ll provide you with a yearbook. That’s it!
