The Sites of Sacramento

My sister gave me the idea for this section. These are my favorite places to go in Sacramento. I'll be adding more as I either think of more or discover new ones.

True Love Coffee House - Finally a place that is open late!!  This is a quirky little cafe in downtown that serves all kinds of cool coffee drinks and other beverages.  They also have a little bit of food.  The best part is they have theme nights.  For example, I think Friday and Saturday nights are Waffles at Midnight and Saturday usually has a live band performing.  The True Love Coffee House is also very proud of its "killer patio out back."  www.truelovesacto.com

Celestin's - This is the only Caribbean restaurant in Sacramento and it is my favorite restaurant anywhere. The food and the atmosphere are marvelous. It is a little expensive to eat at frequently, but as a special treat it really isn't that bad. My favorite is the pork grio, but they are most well known for their gumbos. Actually everything is good especially the rice and beans. The restaurant is very Caribbean and the inside bursts with bright color. It's fancy and at the same time really laid back: you can often see the owner (who speaks French) wearing a t-shirt and a pair of shorts. They have Quite an extensive menu and a lot of Caribbean drinks.

Hours: Lunch: Monday - Friday 11h30a ~ 2p Dinner: Tuesday - Thursday 5h30p ~ 9h30p Friday - Saturday 5h30p ~ 10h30p Sunday 5h30p ~ 9p
Location: They've moved to 1815 H Street I think.  I'll find out this summer when I go there.

Capitol Park - My favorite time to go here is at about midnight, but it is pretty nice during the day too. It has a few memorials, the Capitol building is in there and that looks pretty cool when it is lit up at night. There are also a few gardens in it too. Just get onto Capitol Avenue between N and L streets and you will eventually run into it.

Sacramento International Airport - Yes I am an airport groupie: I love going to the airport. I usually don't go to just hang out by myself or anything, but if someone knows of a place you can sit somewhere around it where the planes fly right over your head please tell me about it. empresshsu@singapore.com.

Thai Cottage - This is a really good Thai restaurant, my favorites are the curries. The mango and sweet rice dessert is delicious too. Probably the best part of the whole experience is the servers wear traditional Thai clothing. Also they have a cool little garden that you can see from the back room.

Location: 2632 Fulton Avenue
Telephone: 916.481.4030

The SMUD Sacramento River walk - The River walk is my favorite place in all of Sacramento. Of course I only go there at night because that is when it is at its best. A long fancy sidewalk has been built along the Sacramento complete with lampposts and a few spots where the sidewalk hangs out over the bank. It has a great view of Downtown which is all lit up at night and if you make a 180 you see the almost pitch black river. It's a really nice place to go and hang out with your favorite person. There is a small parking lot there and you can probably park by the Crocker Art Museum and walk a little ways. I've never had trouble with parking, but then again I'm not there until 1 o'clock in the morning anyway. The river walk is located on Front Street at about O and 3rd street.

The Sacramento Zoo - Of course it isn't as huge as the San Diego Zoo, but it is still a lot of fun. Go here for more information: http://www.saczoo.com

Famous Kabob - Jasmine Rice and Saffron. This restaurant serves Persian food and it is really great. And just because this is the only Persian restaurant I have ever been to, doesn't mean I am in any way biased. They have belly dancers on various nights too. What more could you want?

Location: 1290 Fulton Avenue
Telephone: 916.483.1700

Capitol Garage Coffee Company - A very cool coffee shop. It's not like those yuppie, preppie places. It used to be an actual auto mechanic shop and now they serve coffee. On Tuesdays they have open mike night which is cool. They are also open kind of late for those of us whose real life doesn't start until 9p.

Hours: Monday, Wednesday, Thursday: 7a ~ 10p Tuesday and Friday: 7a ~ 12a Saturday: 8a ~ 12a Sunday: 8a ~ 10p
Location: 1427 L Street
Telephone: 916.444.3633

Folsom Lake - I know it isn't in Sacramento, but it is too cool to leave it off of the list. Anytime of the day is a great time to be here. At night it is especially beautiful because it is calm, quiet and dark. And it is far enough away from city lights so that you can see the stars really well.

If you have any great places that you think should be on this list please e-mail me and I will post it. It doesn't even have to be in Sacramento. Give me the name and a short description and any other info you think is important. empresshsu@singapore.com
