ELO CANCELS 2001 US TOUR

For ELO fans, the most anticipated event in almost 20 years was not to be. The Electric Light Orchestra cancelled the remaining 20 concert dates in America as well as scraped the plans of a UK and European tour. Four of their first dates dates had cancelled outright and a few of the others were changed to smaller venues.

Jeff Lynne, who was busy rehearsing with E.L.O., was unavailable for comment.

Sources indicated that less than 5% of the available tickets were sold within the first few days of each venues announcement, but that ticket sales dropped considerably soon afterwards.

E.L.O. is not the only band to suffer a tour cancellation, as many other artists have had to rearrange dates and cancel shows.

This would have been E.L.O.'s first concert appearance in the USA since 1981, when they were promoting their album, Time.

There have been reports in a few media outlets that ELO may never tour again, however Jeff's management as well as his PR firm seem to think otherwise. Either way, Jeff Lynne is due to return to the studio for a follow up to Zoom, as he had stated in the liner notes of Flashback.

However, this is little consolation to the few hundred die-hard E.L.O. fans who purchased their tickets, scheduled off work and planned their trips just to see their beloved band cancel. Some fans were not even aware that E.L.O. had planned a tour until the announcement came out that the tour had been cancelled.

THE REMASTERS..... SECOND WAVE

According to Rob Caiger of Face The Music zine, the next four ELO remasters (No Answer, On The Third Day, Face The Music, A New World Record) will be released later in the fall of 2001. Caiger has stated that his research in to the vaults at Abbey Road and/or EMI has uncovered a wealth of unreleased ELO material and demos.

The first release of the E.L.O. "First Light" Series has also been pushed back. Originally slated for a May/June release, the debut ELO album will see the light in September 2001. The First Light series is a four set release of ELO's first two albums, the last Move album and Roy Wood's first solo album. All of these are planned as two CD sets with the 2nd CD containing multi-media material.

OLD NEWS

As a special marketing tool, Sony Music Label released a twenty-five minute interview with Jeff Lynne on CD. Unfortunately our ELO kind in Europe and the rest of the world will not get this little treat unless someone puts a copy or two on ebay. Well, forget that! The ELOAS uploaded a little bit of this interview and will continue to add more as space permits. Here is the link to the interview.

In America, ELO appeared on VH1 as Jeff Lynne and the new ELO band performs an hour long set for Storytellers. If you are not in the US and want to enjoy the show check out the new ELO bootleg, "Storytellers plus 9".

Also in August ELO performed during PBS's fund raising drive. Filmed over two days in May, the band performed all their greatest hits plus some songs many were surprised to hear played live. Unfortunately in some of the major markets, PBS decided to NOT show the ELO concert as originally planned. There is a video of the concert available through PBS for a donation of about $100. It is highly likely that Jeff Lynne may be releasing this set himself in the future.

We are the home and host of the ELO webring that was originally founded by the Official ELO fan club in the Netherlands.

Are you looking for some other great ELO sites. We are also the home of the ELO webring. There is another great site administered by Ray Murray called ELO etcetera that is pretty comprehensive and covers anything even remotely associated with ELO. Check them both out!

We also publish a quarterly fanzine called Calling America. So far we are distributing the zine in America only. There is no cost to get a copy, its just a request away! The first issue comes out spring 2002.

Recently a track from Zoom was dug up from somewhere and a fan shared it with the ELO mail list. The only question is... Is this song really produced by Jeff Lynne or did a fan add the orchestrations. You'll have to wait to buy Zoom to hear the "real" track, but here is the fake one. At least, that what we think! What do you think? You will need a real player to hear this file. To get a free player go here.

As always, if you have any questions, suggestions or gripes, feel free to email me at kenpetty@yahoo.com.

until next month.. happy Zooming!
