Wildfowl decoys are a true American art form. The oldest decoys known were found at Lovelock Cave in Nevada by archaeologists in 1924. They were made of reeds woven into the shape of Canvasback ducks. Scientists have determined that they are approximately 1000 years old.

Wooden decoys first appeared in the late 1700's with thousands being carved between the mid 1800's to around 1950. The early decoys were carved by craftsmen to hunt over and to sell to the market hunters along the east coast. They were basic in form with simple paint jobs yet very effective in attracting ducks to hunters. You might say they were "tools of the trade." Decoys are sought after by collectors and individuals all over the world. Some of the early decoys have sold for over $300,000 recently at auction.

Todays carvers have taken the decoy a step further. Realistic style carvings have individual feathers and lifelike attitudes with paint jobs much more sophisticated than the ones found on the early decoys. The combination of these elements have resulted in a carving that looks so real, you expect it to leap into flight at any moment.

Although these decoys sell for hundreds and even thousands of dollars today, they will only appreciate in value in the years to come. They make a sound investment for the future that you can enjoy everyday.

Jim Elik's decoys combine the craftsmanship of yesterday with the artistry of today to produce a quality lifelike carving that will be treasured for many years to come.
