Fugitive Mechanic due back in court (aka Gary Tredway )

Phoenix, Az - Former Vietnam War-era fugitive Howard Mechanic is scheduled to appear in federal court on Friday to answer a felony charge that he used a false Social Security number to obtain an Arizona driver's license in 1995.

A peliminary hearing is set for 2 p.m. before U.S. Magistrate Lawrence Anderson.

Mechanic, 51, remains in a detention facility in Florence, awaiting transfer to a federal prison to serve a five-year sentence for his 1970 conviction for obstructing justice during an anti-war demonstration at Washington University in St. Louis.

Mechanic lived in Scottsdale for at least 13 years under the name Gary Tredway. He was unmasked last week when running for Scottsdale City Council.
