It's cold on the dark night street
but coldest just before dawn
and the only place that's open
is the corner gas stop convienence store
where the bums come
to get their first beer of the day
and the manager won't let anyone
stand out front - even in the cold -
even if you have spent your only dollar on beer.
They stand out front anyway
hustling up the customers for change
then head out back with beer in bag
and return with a grin and a buzz.
