Themes

Five Focus Themes For Our Books:

1.     Neglect: In the book The Orphan Train Rider, Lee’s mother died and his father neglected the boys.  He could not take care of them any longer.  The mother in Somebody Somewhere Knows My Name abandoned her two children at a gas station.

2.     Overpopulation of New York:  During this time, New York was overly populated because of industry jobs.  The people were migrating to the city to find jobs.

3.     Poor living conditions:  In Out of the Dump, the living conditions are very poor.  The children are forced to deal with many deep, adult-like issues.

4.     Children’s Aid Society:  Nearly all of the books mentioned Charles Brace’s Children’s Aid Society and his impact in helping these homeless children.

5.     One person can make a difference:  This should be the overall theme for these books because all of the books proved that one person can make a difference.
