We want the war to end.
We want equal pay for equal work.
We want it now.
Is that too much to ask for?

(Apparently it is, for Shrub and Co.)

A small group of people got to sitting around one night, and we wrote a bunch of anti-war, pro-equal wage parody/protest songs. Some of ‘em are damned entertaining. Others are just plain pissed, and that’s good, too. I thought I’d share them with you fine folks. Enjoy (the background is pink in honor of the amazing wimmin of Code Pink).

Equal Pay (sung to the tune of Aretha Franklin’s “Chain of Fools”)

Pay, pay, pay, pay, pay, pay,
Pay, pay, pay,
Equal pay!

For long, long years, we have made this demand:
Equal wage to what you’d give to a man.
You think you’ve got us where you want us, but we’ll never be your fools.
We want what we’ve earned, and we won’t be your tools.

The Congress tells us, “Leave us alone.”
Republicans say, “Stay at home.”
The Moderates say, “Take it easy.”
But our power is much too strong.

We want pay, pay, pay, pay, pay, pay,
Pay, pay, pay,
Equal pay!

Bombing in Iraq (to Paul Simon’s “Loves Me Like a Rock”)

When Dubya was a little boy, whenever his dad would call his name,
He’d say, “Well, gee, Dad, see all the folks you’re foolin’.”
Goin’ to war against Saddam – who would ever fall for such a thing?
And because my Daddy loves war, I love war;
I think it’s what the country’s here for.
So we’re bombing in Iraq; we’re bombing in Iraq, yeah baby, we’re bombing.

And now that Shrub’s the President, the minute that Congress calls his name,
He says, “Well, hey, guys, see all the folks I’m foolin’.
And anyone who disagrees, we’ll throw ‘em in maximum security.”
And because my Daddy loves war, I love war;
I think it’s what the country’s here for.
So we’re bombing in Iraq; we’re bombing in Iraq, yeah baby, we’re bombing.

War Hawk (to “Hound Dog”)

You ain’t nothin’ but a war-hawk, bombin’ all the time
You ain’t nothin’ but a war-hawk, bombin’ all the time
Well, you ain’t never been for peace; you ain’t no friend of mine.

Well, you said you’d try diplomacy; well that was just a lie
Well, you said you’d try diplomacy; well that was just a lie
Well, you want war with ever nation; you ain’t no friend of mine.

Well, you call Iraqis evil, and North Koreans sly
Well, you call Iraqis evil, and North Koreans sly
But you weren’t legally elected, and you ain’t no friend of mine.

You ain’t nothin’ but a war-hawk, bombin’ all the time
You ain’t nothin’ but a war-hawk, bombin’ all the time
Well, you ain’t never been for peace; you ain’t no friend of mine.

Protest the War (to Jill Sobule’s “I Kissed a Girl”)

Colin came over and talked about Dick,
“I think he can really make this war stick.
I know it’s not a just war, but he’s such a stubborn guy.”
So I opened up and I told about John,
How all his surveillance just seemed so far wrong.
He says it’s the only answer, but
I think he can do better.
So we march in the streets
We tell ‘em loud, we tell ‘em strong:
We know this war’s just plain wrong.
Protest the war! For our families.
Protest the war! For our love of the Earth.

We call on all people to counter the hate,
Protest a totalitarian state.
Work for peace and justice, and our civil liberties.
‘Cause when I look at you, I see hope in your eyes
That together we’ll counter the corporate lies
And bring this unchecked power to its knees.
Bush just wants all the oil
Not in our names will he bloody the soil.
Protest the war! For our families.
Protest the war! Protect our freedom of speech.
Protest the war!

We Demand Our Equal Wages (to Simon and Garfunkle’s “59th Street Bridge Song (Feelin’ Groovy)”)

Pay up for the work we do.
We ought to make the same as you.
We deserve a fair pay rate.
Get behind the equal wages.

Hello, sisters, how’s the child care
Promotions, paid leave, and paid health care?
We are taking to the streets.
We demand our equal wages

You’ve got good deeds to do and some promises to keep.
We’re fighting for justice – our fire never sleeps.
We will work ‘til the struggle sets all women free,
And we get our equal wages.

I Want Fair Treatment (To “You Are My Sunshine”)

I want fair treatment
Just want fair treatment
I would be happy
To be paid the same
I do the same work
That a guy does
And I'm not just a roll in the hay.

I am a woman
A strong woman
You will respect me
Or you will find
That woman's power
Is marching forward
Join us now or we'll leave you behind.

*

The women are marching (To “When Johnny Comes Marching Home”)

The women are marching on today. Hurray! Hurray!
The women are marching on today. Hurray! Hurray!
Women are oppressed
It's a terrible plight
Till our sisters are free
We'll continue to fight
And we'll all have peace and
Wipe out the gender war.

We Wish We Had Equal Wages (to "We Wish You A Merry Christmas”)

We wish we had equal wages
We wish we had equal wages
We wish we had equal wages
And we want them right now!

We do the same work
Getting three-fourths the pay
We wish we had equal wages
And we want them right now!

We won't go until we get them
We won't go until we get them
We won't go until we get them
So bring them right now!

Good health care to all
And free child care too
Equal wages for women
It's the right thing to do!

(alternate)
Good health care to all
And free child care too
Better wages for women
And the same thing for you!

Mr. Rumsfeld (to Simon and Garfunkle’s “Mrs. Robinson”)

We'd like to know a little bit
About you for our files.
The Attorney General says
Dissent must go.
On the highway, on the street
All our prying, spying eyes
Our latest camps, you see
Will feel just like home
So here's to you, Mr. Rumsfeld
Cheney loves you more thank you can know – oh oh oh
Go back to 'Nam, Mr. Rumsfeld
Take your blood and iron far away
Hey hey hey – it's not our way...
Plopping down with Powell on a plush and leather couch
Who's the good cop and who's the bad?
Troops are moving, UN's fuming, but who cares what they do
We decided this one long ago (or)
We're in charge and the people lose.
Where are you now, Franklin Roosevelt
Our Nation turns it's back upon the poor – woo woo woo
What's that you say, Mr. Rumsfeld
Franklin's gone and war is here to stay
Hey hey hey – all the way!

Shoot off your mouth, Mr. Rumsfeld
Bomb Iraq and North Korea too! Woo woo woo!
Go straight to hell, Mr. Rumfeld
We have had enough of such as you
And Ashcroft too...

Power to the people, baby!

Wage Peace; No Blood for Oil, etc. etc.
