We have grown up hearing horror stories about the wolf. We have been led to believe they are vicious beast waiting to kill.

Pawnee Creation Story

According to the Pawnee legend, when the world was created a council of the animal was held, but for unknow reasons Wolf Star (Sirius) was not invited. Wolf Star, angry at this indignity, took his revenge upon Storm that Comes Out of the West. Storm that Comes Out of the West carried a hurricane bag that contained the first human beings. When Storm stopped to rest at night, he would let the humans out of the bag so they could hunt buffalo.

The Wolf Star sent a gray wolf down to track Storm, and the wolf, hungry and looking for food, stole Storm's bag and let the humans out. Angry because there were no buffalo anywhere in sight and Storm was nowhere to be found, the humans killed the gray wolf.

When Storn found the human with the dead wolf, he told them that they were responsible for bringing the first death into the world. Storm asked the humans to skin the wolf and preserve the pelt as a reminder of what they had done. Thereafter Storm told the humans, they would be called the Pawnee.

Mexican Wolf

The gray wolf, Canis lupus, is the main species of wolves in North America. There are five subspecies of the gray wolf. Mexican wolf (Canis lupus baileyi), Great Plains wolf (Canis lupus mibilus), Mackenzie Valley wolf (Canis lupus occidentalis), eastern timber wolf (Canis lupus lycaon), and the arctic wolf (Canis lupus arctos). The red wolf, Canis rufus, is a separate species from the gray wolf. Each subspecies is distinctive by fur color, habitat, and size.
