DoCoMo: Breaking Into the US Market

The earliest motivation for my interest in research arose when I took an independent study with Professor Ernest Sibert of Syracuse University (SU) for my minor degree in Computational Science in 1995. I was challenged to implement a “Temperature Controlled System” for the SU Food Services Department using parallel processing for performance. The main idea behind the project was to integrate logic programming with LISP (List Processor) using both conventional supercomputer and parallel architecture including Connection Machine. Since my project was successful and I enjoyed doing research, I wanted to get involved with more projects and to enroll in graduate school. I spoke to a few professors including Professor Sibert about my desire. They had given me an insight on how much more effective research would be if I were to get some exposure to the outside world.  Since I already had a job offer from Motorola Malaysia, I believed that this would be a good chance for me to explore and learn

I started as a System Engineer at Motorola Malaysia. I was attached to the Research and Development Department where I was exposed to a great deal of research conducted by engineers. We utilized networked computers in all of our work. The conventional wisdom is that the computers foster a research-centered, collaborative learning environment. Additionally, a significant push is being exerted to provide more training in research and technology. At the same time, technical paper and patent writing are being promoted to encourage creativity and innovation. Some of the projects that I was involved in throughout my tenure were Help Desk System where I implemented the information and Help Desk System using Oracle; Disaster Recovery Plan where I designed controls and backup procedures to protect the system and data; and Computer Security where I was responsible to lead the project that involved planning, installing and maintaining the security system of our computers.

Though all the experience and knowledge that I have gained throughout my two years stay at Motorola were beneficial, I believed that working in a different industry would be a great exploration and a unique experience. I wanted to have the opportunity to work with a local company for a change. Moreover, it was my opinion that a researcher in particular needs to get to know different professional cultures and to be able to use different working styles in order to reach his or her full potential in research. This became obvious since the company that I joined, BHL Bank, was a small-capitalized company. By working there, I was exposed not only to a new working background but also to a different working culture.

At BHL Bank, I started as an Information System Security Executive in the Information Technology Division. Because of my quick mastery of the responsibilities assigned to the Security Executive, I was given opportunity to become a project leader. As a project leader, I had an opportunity to work very closely with people from other departments and companies. I learned how to perform basic financial analysis, budget analysis and how to present findings in an effective manner. Having successfully completed all the assignments, I was promoted as a Quality Assurance Executive to report directly to the Division Head. My new position provided me with several opportunities to have close contact with numerous successful individuals who have great influence in Malaysia. I also had the pleasure of meeting with and forming friendships with faculty members from local universities where I was invited to deliver an information technology perspective on security, privacy and virtual communications to students. I have sustained frequent and important contact with faculty members particularly with those from University Science of Malaysia (USM).

I decided to go to the School of Information Studies at Syracuse University (SU) since the Telecommunications and Network Management masters program matched my goal well. I was interested in a thorough overview of networking technologies for data, voice, broadband multimedia and wireless, and in an analysis of their applications in business and non-profit organizations. In addition, I am also interested to learn about the policies, laws, and regulations that shape the network environment. During my graduate study at SU, I managed to achieve great success in a wide variety of classes including technical and management courses. I made significant contributions to classroom discussions, research projects and often achieved excellent marks as a result of diligent study and close interaction with other students and faculties.

Throughout my studies and career, I have tried to obtain a wide variety of experiences so my graduate studies can build upon this solid foundation. I have worked with a multinational company, a local company and with a local university. I have learned much from my coworkers throughout my career who were engaged in many different research activities. I enjoy being involved in processes that are evolving and require constant learning and researching.  My long-term plans, to be a professor and a researcher, would require that I become involved with more complex organizations, different segments and solve increasingly complicated problems. Obtaining a Masters degree served as a starting point, further study will provide me with an increased ability to understand how to analyze various issues and develop workable solutions to such problems

I choose Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) for my PhD program because I had a good impression of the research environment there. I also admire the diversified programs offered by the School of Engineering particularly in Decision Sciences and Engineering Systems (DSES) program
