I AM GOING TO SHOW YOU HOW THE INTERNET WAS STARTED AND WHAT IT HAS BECOME......

Today in 2003 we are privilaged to have a wonderful device called the INTERNET. It is in most homes and in all work-places. People who use it a lot seem to take it for granted.

- YES its so easy to use the INTERNET annd it is extremely accessible


  • BUT - Where did it come from?

  • Who designed it?

  • Why was it set up?

  • and What was the Ist purchase made over the INTERNET?

    • HERE IS MY TIME-LINE FOR THE INTERNET

  • 1962........The RAND Corporation begins research into robust, distributed communication netwoprks for military command and control.

  • 1968........First generation of Hardware and Software is designed

  • 1962-1969...Conceived in early 1960's. Under the leadership of the Department of Defence Advanced Research Agency (APRA) the INTERNET grows from a paper model to a small network (ARPANET). It is to promote the sharing of super-computers amongst researches in the U.S.

  • 1971........The ARPANET grows to 23 hosts connecting Colleges and Government research centers around the U.S.

  • 1972........The INTERNETWORKING WORKING GROUP becomes the 1st of several standards - srtting entities to govern the network. Vinton Cerf is elected teh 1st chairman and has become "FATHER OF THE INTERNET"

  • 1974........TELNET - the 1st commercial version of ARPANET is established.

  • 1976........Queen Elizabeth goes on-line with the 1st royal e-mail message.

  • 1979........1st use-net groups are established. Users from around the world join these discussion groups to talk about the NET, politics, religion and other topics.

  • 1981........ARPANET has 213 hosts

  • 1982........"INTERNET" term used for the 1st time.

  • 1985........Internet e-mail and news groups now part of life in many colleges.

  • 1987........Hosts exceed 10,000

  • 1990........ARPANET is decommisioned leaving vast network of networks called the INTERNET. Hosts exceed 300,000.

  • 1991........World Wide Web is born

  • 1994........Pizza Hut accepts the 1st order over the INTERNET - a mushroom, pepperoni with extra chesse.

  • 1996........10 million hosts online

  • 1997........Users in 150 counteries are connected onto the INTERNET

  • 2003........Today it is getting bigger and bigger.
