Many of us have wondered how and when our family name came into use. Eggink is the name I was born with and its curious sound and spelling stirred in me a compelling interest to trace it to its source. Lochem - "Hayekinck" Het huis Zutphen

It began at castle
Silvolde in the well watered pastures of Hamaland, now the province of Gelderland in the eastern Netherlands.

Kasteel Silvolde in 1188 was known as de curtis and castrun Silvelden "located on Egginkstraat in Silvolde. It was the center for rent and tax collection for the heirs of the goederen (freehold land) of the Imperial Abby "Klooster Bethleham in Gaanderen" controlled at that time by Arch bishop
Phillip van Heinsberg (of Valkenburg family) one of the heirs of  Wichmann Count of Hamaland, Count of Zutphen and his wife Luitgard van Vlandeern, daughter of Arnolf count of Vlandeern and Adel of Vermandois a descendent of Charlagmane, through Count Gerrit Van Valkenburg In 1229 it was recorded as Hof Enekinc (Eggink) and in the record of 1421 the spelling is Egkynck or hoeve Eggink on Egginkstraat.

Control of the "Eggink" goederen passed through the female line to Sweder van Ringelberg of Castle Wisch also known as Sweder van Wisch..  Many heirs shared in the same goederen with each portion called an erf goed (farmstead} portions could only be sold between and to blood descendents.

The Eggink family name only came into use after the 80 year war 1568-1648 when in order to retain control of their property the heirs became Calvinists and renounced any claim to royal or noble titles in the Netherlands.

I am one of those descendents through Jan and Marrie Eggink  geerfden in Eefde a buurtschap or cluster of farmsteads near Zutphen who by the privilege of birth and blood owned alloidel ownership of het "Eggink" after their marrage in 1665.

Ownership passed through them to their daughter Fenneken Janssen Eggink, wife of Jan Gerrits and through her to Marie Janssen Eggink wife of Roeloff Vrondel and through her to Fenneken Roeloff Eggink wife of Jan Welmers deceased to their underage son Jan Welmers Eggink, my ancestor.
