The Egg has been the sign of birth for
thousands of years.
It is not
known when eggs were first decorated but the egg is used as a
symbol for the re-birth of Christ at Easter. The decorating of
eggs by painting and etching is still widespread in Eastern
Europe. The strength of the ovoid (egg) shape has also been used
in the design of pottery and metal utensils for thousands of
years.
Carl Faberg used the egg shape for some of his enameled, gold,
silver and precious stones creations for the Russian Tsars at the
end of the nineteenth century. This possibly inspired the Egg
Crafters of today to use egg shells for their own creations. Eggs
are not only painted but cut and shaped to make trinket boxes,
clocks, ornaments, etc.
Egg
Crafting as a hobby is very popular in North America and is
gaining popularity in other countries especially in Great
Britain. A flourishing society -The Egg
Crafters Guild of Great Britain - was founded in 1979 and has a growing international
membership.
I was
first introduced to Egg Crafting by a friend about 25 years ago, and became a member of the Egg Crafters Guild of Great
Britain. Since then, I have taught the basics of egg crafting at Evening and
Saturday classes in some of our City Community Colleges.
A
few copies of "Introducing Egg Crafting" used by my classes are
available. Click on image for details.
