September

               Back to School Blues

Back to school!! Oh No!! This is usually the cry that can be heard from children when September rolls in. This is not always the case for the parents! Well, whether you're happy or sad about school starting, it does happen, no matter what. With school starting, also comes the frustration for both parents and children of how to manage all the changes of adapting to the new school routine. Some children love the structure and routines that come with school, while others miss the freedom of being care-free for the Summer. For those children, setting up regular nightly homework routines is like having a tooth pulled at the dentist - not fun! This is when power struggles begin between the parent and their child. Once again, how you go about setting up those morning and nightly routines is so-o-o important. It can make all the difference for you the parent.

Helpful Tips for Parents:

. Initially, you may want your child to get up a half an hour earlier until he/she has adjusted to the morning routine - this will reduce your child's stress level and yours as well.

. Establish a place by the door to place the backpack, lunch box, library books, etc., so your child will be able to find everything needed quickly on leaving for school each morning.

. You might like to tape a few picture reminders there i.e.. eyeglasses, pencil case, notes for teacher, etc.

. Establish a set time for homework to begin -  it is best to have your child relax and have a snack when he/she arrives home from school before beginning homework.

. Designate a specific area for homework to be completed - make sure all the materials are kept in a box there, this eliminates frequent "ups and downs" to find items needed.

. It may be helpful to have your child near by so you can answer questions on work he/she is confused about. It also helps you to redirect back to the task if "daydreaming".

. You may want to shut off the TV until all work is finished - this may be a little inconvenient but it will pay off in the long run.
