Winter Doldrums

The winter months are beginning to seem just a little too long, about now. Everyone is feeling "housebound". Usually the weather is so cold your child isn't able to get outside to play. Even recess is held indoors due to the "wind chill factor". The lack of sunlight begins to take it's toll on everyone. You may notice that your child has developed some kind of hearing loss that seems to be only specific to you. Others lost in their own thoughts, constantly "day dreaming", seem to have gone on vacation and left you at home. Some children will seem more lethargic, veritable "couch potatoes", who are difficult to get moving. Everything they do is an major effort. The drain on you, as you push to get them moving, is equally exhausting. While others seem to have lost all manner of self-control, "flying-off-the-handle" at the least little thing. One word from you sends them erupting like Mount Vesuvius. You're hoping this winter won't last much longer. You're yearning for a sandy beach, warm, sunny, days and a beach chair to lounge and relax in by the water while a soft, gentle, breeze soothes you! What do you get - school vacation in the dead of winter!!

Helpful Tips For Parents:

. If you can't pack a suitcase and head for the sun, here are some fun ideas:

. Create your own beach - for about $5.00 you can pick up a bag of sand, place it in a plastic container, set it on a sheet, add one pitcher of water and let your child build castles, make roads, and use their toys in the sand it will entertain them for hours.

. Get your out your beach chairs, put on your bathing suits, take them shades off the lamps, spread out a blanket and have a picnic for supper.

. Pitch a tent  or make one out of blankets in your living room or family room, get out the sleeping bags or comforters and camp out - your children will love it!

. Play-Hide-and-Go-Seek, Flashlight Tag, Giant Steps, Freeze, or send your children on a "Scavenger Hunt" - this is a fun way to pick up the house, at the same time.

. Make hot chocolate, pop "popcorn", get a bag of cranberries and string cranberries and popcorn for the birds, then hang them out side on the bushes and watch them come in to eat!!

. Peanut butter spread on pine cones, then rolled in bird seed is another great way to feed the birds during the winter.
