People and Population
Dominica has a population of approximately 70,000 people, including 3,400
indigenous Caribs. Dominica is home to the only remaining Amerindian indigenous
(Caribs) population in the Carribbean. The Carib people, originally known as
Kalinago, live on a 3,700 acre reserve on the north-east coast of Dominica.
Most of the population of 3,400 people are farmers, fishermen or craft
producers. Everyone speaks English in Dominica but an English dialect and
French patois are widely spoken. Almost all of the people on the island of
Dominica profess Christianity, and about 80 percent are Roman Catholics.
The tourist industry is small, and farming is the principal industry. They
heavily dependent on the bananas which is very vulnerable to weather conditions.
