Welcome to my Homepage

About me:

My name is Edward William Ott Jr. I was born on July 14, 1975, in Frederick, MD.

My professional background is in Analytical Chemistry. I graduated from the University of Maryland at College Park, in December of 2000, with a BS in Chemisrty.

The tools of my trade include but are not limited too; ICP-OES/MS, DCP-OES, AAS, GC-FID, GC-ECD, GC/MS, Pyrolysis GC/MS, LC, HPLC, FTIR, UV-VIS, and Fluorescence. I am also proficient with a multitude of methods for preparing samples for analysis with these instruments.

These days I am working as an Associate Chemist at Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory in the Technical Services Department's Applied Chemistry Section. Our group specializes in molecular imprinted polymers, for more information please visit www.imprintedpolymer.com.

Before APL, I was employed by Millennium Inorganic Chemicals, now a part of Lyondell Chemicals, at their Research Center in Glen Burnie, MD. At Millennium I worked in the Analytical Department, as a Senior Technician and finally as a Researcher. Mostly we characterized different grades of titanium dioxide (TiO2) pigment, surface treatments applied to the pigment, and intermediate products in the TiO2 manufacturing process. We also performed a great deal of analysis on products that use titanium dioxide pigment. That includes a wide variety of materials, from paint, to vinyl siding to pumpkin seeds. If it has TiO2 in it, I have probably had to do some type of analysis on the material.

Before Millennium, I worked at FMC in Baltimore through Lab Support as a QC Chemist. I mostly analyzed samples using either GC or HPLC, for  organic components (pesticides and herbicides), with occasional waste-water testing.  While still a student at the University of Maryland, I was an assistant chemist at the Army Research Lab in Adelphi, MD, where we worked to develop spectrophotometers, and imaging systems.

My interests are diverse, aside from my interest in physical science, I also have a hobbyist's interest in computers, music, and literature.
