John Berlin made his HSFL debut during the 2000 season, and was quickly deemed as one of the top quarterback prospects in the league.  Berlin dominated his was through the pre-season, making him an early favorite for rookie of the year.  Berlin showed that his quarterbacking ability, like so many others, is only a reflection of his receivers.  Berlin has a very strong arm, and can throw the deep ball with the best of them.  His accuracy is lacking a little, but he can make up for it with good deep threats.  His inability to make plays with his feet causes him to pass from the pocket, and gives him difficulty if he does not have a deep threat at receiver.  Berlin struggled through portions of the 2000 season, but also showed signs of the man who played during the pre-season.  He ultimately finished third in the rookie of the year balloting behind Wes Blackwell, and Nate Small.  Berlin made his return in
week 6 of 2001 throwing a touchdown and an interception in his return.  Berlin led a run-oriented offense, and played in only one game in 2001, thus giving him fewer opportunities to throw than most quarterbacks.  Many people feel that Berlin's irrational desire to attempt to salvage a basketball career may cost him his shot at becoming the player he can be.  The HSFL is said to be interested in getting Berlin back on a full-time basis, but he needs to make a commitment to the league before he has a chance to become one of the best.
