Appendix 2: Accompanying Letter to the Stress Survey

 

Dear colleague.

 

Please find enclosed the first Annual Edge Hill NATFHE Stress Survey for all academic staff. As a result of staff concerns about work-related stress, which have been brought to the attention of Edge Hill NATFHE, we have decided to construct this survey. We want to establish whether there is a problem of overwork at Edge Hill and, if the evidence suggests that there is such a problem, to submit this evidence to senior management at Edge Hill and, campaign for a reduction in workloads.

 

There are many reasons why such a survey would help in dealing with work-related stress at Edge Hill. Firstly, teachers/lecturers need an opportunity to report work-related incidents of stress in a collective manner. Furthermore, it has been consistently reported to Edge Hill NATFHE that work-related stress has not been adequately dealt with at Edge Hill.

 

It would be a fundamental mistake to underestimate the impact of work-related stress on an individual’s health. Some of the symptoms include poor mental health; heart disease; back pains; gastrointestinal problems; gums/mouth/toothache; shortness of breath; dizziness; earache; swollen ankles; rashes/itches; and headache. From the point-of-view of the college management, work-related stress can lead to an increase in sickness absence; a reduction in staff morale; poor staff performance; and, high staff turnover.

 

In addition to this survey, we would like to meet and interview some members of academic staff in order to obtain more detailed information on the effects of work-related stress at Edge Hill. If you would like to participate in this we would be very happy to speak to you.
