THINGS I CAN'T LEAVE BEHIND

MY WORK HOLIDAY

Background
As of May 2001, I resigned from my full time position to start a working holiday in London and possibly Dublin. This will take my time away from home to up to three years.

What I was doing before was just a "career". This trip could be something else...
For the curios among you these are the reasons why I favoured a working holiday
  • Life is short, things are going to change, historic landmarks eventually will be destroyed. This is more important than a generic job or career
  • More freedom to do the things I want to do in life without being restricted by company expectations that come with a career.
  • To be able to say "I did this" and survived the experience!
  • Job flexibility - The job restrictions placed on the visa meant that I can not work in a job for more than 6 months at a time(very important - considering what I have been doing beforehand)
  • Flexibility to travel and plan "on a whim"
  • Mingle with different people and learn about other cultures
At the end, making such a move was a tough decision in itself. In the beginning I had been quite negative about the idea, but after spending about 6 months listing all the pitfalls and benefits, I was finally convinced that doing this meant I would learn a great deal about myself and the world.

Resources
A small piece of advice: if you are planning on doing lots of travel, visit Canberra regularly. This is where many of the embassies are situated and they will provide you with the information necessary for visas. For resources on how I arranged visas, go to my Favourite links page under the heading "Travel".
