Florentius comes from the Latin word “florens” (blossoming).

History:
Florentius was the name of a 3rd century martyr saint, and thus spread across Europe. Florence, the English form, was found occasionally (for both men and women) in the Middle Ages. The male form died out in the 17th century in England, and a little later in Ireland. In other languages however, it still exists, most notably in France (as Florent).
