Etymology:
Dylan is a Welsh name. It originally meant ”Of the Sea,” or “Son of Waves.” It was the name of a minor Welsh god of the sea.

History:
Dylan was originally a sea god from ancient Welsh legend. It began modern use, spreading to the outside world with the fame of Dylan Thomas, a famous poet born to Welsh parents. It further spread when Robert Allen Zimmerman, an American folk singer, took the name Bob Dylan in honor of the poet.
