Cyril is the English form of Cyrillus, the Latin form of Kyrillos, Greek name based on “kyrios” meaning “Lord,” or “Master.”

History:
Cyril was the name of two early saints: St. Cyril of Jerusalem (?-357) and St. Cyril of Alexandria (?-481). It very popular in the Eastern Orthodox church (St. Cyril and his brother taught the Slavs writing) and did not spread to England until 17th century. It did not become common until the 19th century.
