Arnold comes from a Germanic name, Arenvald, meaning “Eagle Ruler” from “arn” (eagle) and “wald” (ruler).

History:
The Old English version of the name Earnweald, but it did not survive the Norman invasion. Instead, the Normans introduced their version, Arnaud (from the Germanic Arenvald) after their 1066 invasion. Although Arnaud was fairly common in England in the 12th and 13th centuries, it was rare by the 1600s. Arnold was revived (via the Latin Arnoldus) in the 19th century.
