Etymology:
Albert is the modern English form the Old Germanic names Adalbert (or Adelbert), or the Old English name Aethelbert, (or Aethelberht, or Ethelbert) . Originally it meant “Noble Bright” from “adal” or “aethel” (noble) and “berht” (bright).

History:
Albert (though present) was never very common during the Middle Ages or afterwards, lasting in rural England until the 17th century (as Halbert).

In the 19th century, Albert was reintroduced to England via Germany and the German connections of the royal family, especially when Queen Victoria married Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha in 1840.

It was especially popular among the lower classes of Britain.

Albert has declined in the 20th century.
