Etymology:
Aisha is an Arabic name meaning “Woman,” “Rising Sun,” or “Lively.”

History:

Aisha is an important Arabic name, one with much significance to Muslims, as Aisha was one of the more important of Mohammads’s wives. Its sudden rise in the United states in the late 1970s can be attributed to the corresponding rise of the Black Muslim movement.

In certain, earlier cases, the form Ayesha can be traced to H. Rider Haggard (1856-1925), a popular British novelist who used it in his 1887 novel She for the name of his heroine, a white goddess of Africa referred to as “She Who Must Be Obeyed.”
