Flight of the Cygnus

A Beta Scenario for Star Blazers Fleet Battle System by Jon Halter

History. With the defeat of the White Comet the Earth was left open and undefended. Only a handful of EDF ships survived. One of the first ships off the Construction yards was the Andromida I class Cygnus. While on it's maiden voyage it suffered a Space Warp accident that sent it to the orbit of planet Brumis. A hasty force of remaining EDF ships was dispatched to escort the Cygnus back home. With it's Space Warp ability crippled the Cygnus set course for the Shipyards at Saturn/ Titan. The Journey home would have been uneventful except for the sudden arrival of portions of the Comet Empire's Support Fleet. The Comet Empire Commander, thirsting for revenge, set out to destroy the Cygnus before it could return home. The Cygnus had to survive the gauntlet of attacking Comet Empire ships and get to the relative safety of Saturn/Titan defense zone.

Campaign Rules:

1. Determining the Comet Empire Order of Battle for Each Scenario. At the beginning of each scenario the Comet Empire player rolls a single D6 and consults the C.E. Random Forces chart. Once a force has been selected for a scenario then, if the same number is re-rolled for a later scenario, another die roll must take place until a C.E. force that has not been in battle is selected.

2. EDF Initial Forces. The EDF player's Initial Forces are used in each campaign battle. If a Ship is destroyed in a Scenario then it is not available for the remainder of the Campaign.

3. EDF Reinforcements. At the start of each battle the EDF player rolls a single D6. If a 1 is rolled then the following units are added to the EDF player's forces for the remainder of the campaign.
1 x Argo W/ full compliment of B.C.
2 x Frigates

4. EDF Supplies. At the beginning of the Campaign all EDF ships are carrying a full load of missiles and torpedoes. This includes everything shown on the WDF and the Cargo Capacity of the Cygnus. At the beginning of each subsequent scenario each Missile or Torpedo launcher that is not destroyed is fully reloaded.

5. EDF Repair between scenarios. Between each campaign scenario the EDF player is allowed to conduct repairs. The repair rate is 25% of the total original hull rate (round down). Thus a SBC w/ 50 hull can repair up to 12 damaged hull boxes between missions. In addition each surviving EDF ship may repair 1 weapon or special weapon system that is marked destroyed.

Scenario setup

In all scenarios except when the EDF forces encounter Comet Empire Force 6, EDF Forces start in the center of the map moving at speed 6. The EDF Forces have 2 turns worth of Special Power accumulation rolls at the start of the game. The EDF player may have as many B.C. deployed as he wishes as long as those units have the CAP mission profile. Any B.C. to be launched with any other mission profile must wait until turn 1 to be launched.

Comet Empire units are deployed within two hexes of any map edge after the EDF player has set up his forces. The C.E. player may split up his forces as he sees fit and is not required to enter from just one side. The C.E. player may deploy all his B.C. during setup as he wishes.

Special note: If the Scenario involves Comet Empire Force 6 then the setup conditions are reversed.

Scenario Victory Conditions

The Scenario ends when all forces belonging to one side have been destroyed or captured or if the opposing forces are separated at any time by more then 30 hexes.

Campaign Victory Conditions

The EDF player wins a Major victory if the Cygnus survives the campaign.
The EDF player wins a Minor victory if any escort ship survives to the end of the campaign
The Comet player wins an Major victory if all EDF ships are destroyed.
The Comet player wins a minor victory if the Cygnus is destroyed but any other EDF ships survive.

Tips:

Comet Player: In the early scenarios concentrate on stripping the EDF fleet of it's escorts. If you can reduce the number of escorts before one of your big carrier groups attacks it should make short work of the Cygnus. If the Argo arrives your mission will grow increasingly hard. Concentrate fire on the Cygnus when possible, even if it means going for a minor victory because other EDF ships survive.
