PUBLIC SCHOOLS IN NEW ORLEANS
The Situation

Without a doubt there has been much confusion about the state of schools in New Orleans.  I took it upon myself to construct this page as a guide to those who can't seem to quite grasp the situation of public schools in New Orleans, post-Katrina.

Many insist that New Orleans has three school systems running.  That is open to discussion and interpretation, I suppose.  The fact is that there are two entities dealing with public schools in New Orleans---New Orleans Public Schools and the State Department of Education.

New Orleans Public Schools has schools and has issued charters to several organizations.  The State DOE created the Recovery School District in order to assist with the opening of schools.  The State has also issued charters under both the RSD and the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education.

Hopefully the lists that I have provided on this page clears up a couple of things.  One, which schools are which.  Two, the inane notion across America that only "two or three schools are open in 'New Orleenz'."  By the way, the vast majority of private schools are running.  Some even managed to open only a couple of months after Katrina.

The charter school association that deserves special distinction is the Algiers Charter School Association.  Granted charters by both the Orleans Parish School Board and the Recovery School District, this organization is developing into a district unto itself, almost.
