Affordable Housing Design
Housing for Texas Colonias is currently in development.  New or upgraded  homes may also be built/designed within the city limits as well (in non-colonia areas).

COLONIAS are rural areas outside the city limits that are along the U.S./Mexico border where problems such as inadequate housing, no sewage or city water , and sometimes no electricity are even available, with high counts of disease and health problems such as cholera and hepatitis.  Income levels are typically at poverty level, and households are usually 90%+ Hispanic and/or spanish speaking.

Design strategies
for ALL our homes include:

Alternative or Standard Construction
depending on your needs/wants
and zoning and codes

EPA approved
Energy Star energy efficiency standards for 30% utility savings on heating/cooling

Dome homes and dome roofing systems for additonal 30% efficiency
(dome homes allow more floor space with less heating/cooling area so you get optimum living space with less waste)

Passive Solar home design for winter home heating and daylighting
(proper overhangs keep the sun out in the summer and allow it in during winter, proper orientation for glazing, including tile floors for thermal mass "heat sinks")

Solar hot water heating
(supplied through Acro Solar Lasers)

Solar water distillers
for on-site water purification roof or ground mounted (supplied by Solaqua)

Solar PV (Photovoltaic)
complete electric systems built to suit with optional back-up generator (with grid tie)
Wind Power also available

Rain-catching systems
for water harvesting and gardening, back-up water supply, etc. - used as a water conservation method

Grey-wate
r recycling systems with optional tank, sump-pump, and plant and tree drip watering system

Energy Star appliances
with optional propane refrigerators/freezers
(propane applicances through Lehman's)

Composting Toilets
(by Sun Mar)
or
Water-saving Toilets
and low-flow showerheads (2 gal/min)

Compact and fluorescent lighting
in all rooms, indirect lighting available

All-wood handmade cabinets
for kitchen/bath, etc.
(wood and 3/4" plywood sides - NO
presswood used)

AFFORDABLE  SOLAR  HOUSING  DESIGN
NEWSPAPER CLIPPING:  Passive Solar Straw-bale house near Lincoln, NE was owner-built by Sharon and Gerald Eby-Martin in the late 1990's as their first home.

EXPERIENCE:

Gerald Martin has been on the Board of Directors for the El Paso Solar Energy Assocation and further served as EPSEA Representative while on the Board for the Texas Solar Energy Society in Austin, TX.  Gerald has taken classes on PV design and applications and has assisted in conferences, workshops, and other public meetings.  He is currently a Webmaster as well as having past employment in managerial positions and was in the U.S. Navy with Honorable discharge.

Sharon Eby-Martin is currently a Board Member and Project Manager for the El Paso Solar Energy Association and has managed 2 Borderpact solar water distillation projects as well as a $100K EPA grant solar distillation project.  She has served on the Earth Day Planning Committee in the past as well as being involved in many conferences, speaking engagements (where she presented), workshops, and seminars across TX and NM.  She is currently in an Office Manager position in El Paso  and also does research and investigations with Saber Enterprises out of Houston.  Her unique experience with the still projects directly in TX and NM and (bi-nationally) Mexico Colonias has given her a working knowledge of Colonia circumstances and problem areas, which she and her husband, Gerald, intend to help overcome by providing a WIN-WIN situation for both the Colonia Residents themselves (through an upgraded living style) as well as helping in the 'big picture' by assisting in the elimination of obstacles that plague colonias.
