Greetings Brethren,

How about these gas prices,it cost me to mow my lawn as much as it does to go to work and home for one day.

May 10th East Gate hosted 30 brothers from other lodges, for an informative seminar that was presented by the Grand Master Donald E. Mosier, and Grand Secretary William R. Crawford. The forum was about how to mentor our newly proposed and new brothers. Also a little history on membership totals over the years, membership highs, lows and what may have caused these. There were ideas and thoughts of how we as brothers and lodges may help correct the lows and retain our memberships.

At the May 14th stated meeting we read one invitation to petition for the three Masonic ritual degrees at East Gate. His name is Alec Palmitier whose father Brother Dave Palmitier is a member of East Gate. He is to be voted on at the stated meeting on June 11th If he is voted on and accepted to take the degrees, his first will be on June 18th one week after stated. That is why his degrees on the billfold cut out on front of this newsletter says tentative. Brad Vonk had completed his 3rd degree on the May 7th and will be back at the June 11th stated to prove up on his proficiency and sign the by laws.

Also at the May stated. There has been interest from our brothers to purchase shirts with the East Gate Masonic emblem. A committee was formed and will check out style, colors and prices, and will report back. I feel this is a good way to advertise our lodge.

Past Master Tim Crewes has been elected as one of the trustees for the lodge. He will take Jack Lyons position that had resigned. Congratulations Tim!

The Masons and Eastern Star joint memorial service on May 20th was a fine tribute to our departed brothers and sisters. Our thanks to everyone who helped, to the officers of both bodies and special thanks to Kathy Hatfield who gave the address and to brother Gene Hatfield for the benediction.

The Alter of the lodge for the past month has been draped for the passing of two brothers. Clyde Coffman and Floyd England. Both brothers were fifty-year members of Masonry. Brother Floyd was a dual member, he was also a member of the Masonic lodge in Shellsburg, Iowa. Our deepest sympathy is extended to both their families.

Sick brothers: Brother George Mincks. He is at Valley View on Guthrie, room # 16 recovering. He is feeling well. If you go visit on Tuesday, Thursday or Saturday make the visit after 3:00 pm. Brother Dave Hatfield return home from his appointment in Iowa City and is feeling better.

Sunday June 22nd is East Gate Masons and Eastern Star joint potluck picnic at Grandview Park. It will be in the enclosed shelter on the west side of the park off Guthrie Ave. The time will be from 1:00 to 4:00 pm. We are asking everyone to bring their favorite covered dish or desert, drink, own table service and chair. The lodge will supply the meat, condiments and buns.

Thursday June 26th East Gate golf fellowship night at Rolling Hills Golf Course 6:00pm. Course is just 2 miles West of Norwalk on Highway 28. It has a nine-hole par 3, and a nine-hole par 4. You can decide which you want to play or how many to play. I am recommending, playing the par 3 because of the speed of play, crowd and time of day, also it looks fun. Sandwiches to be after first nine. Drinks are on your own. I will need some input on how many to expect. Give me a call on my cell at 664-5847 or home 287-0904 and leave message. There is also a sign up sheet at the lodge. Note: Rain date none, must be rescheduled.

Prices at course: Par 3 walking nine $10.00, 18 holes $15.00. With cart, par 3 or par 4 nine holes $18.00, 18 holes $25.00.

You don’t have to play, come and watch. Come out enjoy some good fellowship!

The DQ is not the only thing to do on Wednesday night. See you at the lodge.

“Friendship opens many doors, each with a different view, but none could be more welcome than the door that leads to you.”

Fraternally yours,
Alvin Martindale
