Legal
Homosexuality is legal, and most rights of the metropolitan French mother country apply. The equal age of consent of 16 was introduced in 1982. New Caledonia holds a unique position among French territories, enjoying increased autonomy over a period from January 2000 until 2014 when a referendum over full independence supposedly will be held. Hopefully the transfer of law will not affect homosexuals in a negative way.
Recently, a new gay association, Homo Sphere, was created in Nouméa.
New Caledonia has a long
history of abuse of basic human rights by the French colonialists against
the local Kanaks. In January 1988, the French government denationalized
the Kanaks (making them foreigners in their own country) and
confiscated their lands.
The situation has stabilized since then and hopefully New Caledonia is
on its way towards peace and independence.
Topless and nude bathing is illegal.
