Information on the situation for homosexuals in Malawi:

Illegal

Homosexuality is illegal and considered an "act against the order of nature". Foreigners caught in homosexual acts have been deported. Malawi nationals are reported to have been imprisoned or detained without a trial.

Malawi became independent from Great Britain in 1964. It was formerly a part of Nyasaland. Malawi adopted a new constitution in 1994 and became a parliamentary democracy. The new president, Mr. Bakili Muluzi, freed political prisoners and closed three prisons where tortures had taken place.

Earlier, tourists had to conform to a dress code (no slacks or short skirts for women and no long hair or flared slacks for men) and it is still recommended to dress conservative when visiting remote areas. Traditional courts with tribal chiefs still exist.
