Information on the situation for homosexuals in South Korea:

Legal

There are no laws against homosexuality in South Korea. Homosexuality is only rarely mentioned, and has never been brought before the courts. "Come Together", the first Korean campus association for gay college students emerged at Yonsei University in 1995.

The number of Koreans coming out as homosexuals is growing every day. However, on September 19, 1997 the "First Seoul Queer Film and Video Festival" at Yonsei University was closed by the authorities just hours before the opening.

South Korea has seen an enormous economic growth, from one of the world's poorest nations in the early 60's, to a mid-ranking industrial power today. It is a fragile, new democracy, with reforms introduced after massive protests in 1987.
