Information on the situation for homosexuals in Ghana:

Illegal? / legal

According to most sources, male homosexuality is illegal, but some say there are no laws and that it is quite common and accepted. So until further notice, I will list male homosexuality in Ghana as illegal. Apparantly there are no laws concerning lesbians.

There is at least one homosexual organization operating in Ghana, the Progressive Youth Association. It has some 200 members, half of whom are women. It works for the abolition of laws against gay sex and the release of persons imprisoned for homosexuality, supports isolated gays and lesbians, and distributes AIDS information.

Ghana, formerly a British colony called the Gold Coast, was the first Sub-Saharan country in Africa to achieve independence, in 1957.
