Information on the situation for homosexuals in Ecuador:

Legal

Part 1 of Penal Code Article 516 which criminalized (male) homosexual activities with four to eight years' imprisonment was repealed by the Constitutional Tribunal on November 25, 1997. This was a great victory for the gay organizations that had struggled for this for several years. As late as in June of 1997, the police raid of a gay bar in Cuenca created a stir both locally and internationally.

It is now hoped that the legalization in Ecuador will influence the Latin American countries that still criminalize sex between consenting adults of the same sex.

This law reform certainly is a great leap in the right direction for human rights in Ecuador.  Still, police are reported to be harassing transvestites as well as male prostitutes.
