Information on the situation for homosexuals in the
Cayman Islands:

Illegal / Legal

The Cayman Islands, geographically insignificant, but financially an important tax haven for more or less shady businesses from around the world, made the headlines in early 1998 when it stopped a Norwegian Cruise Line ship with some 900 gay men (mainly Americans) on board from visiting the islands. This was, of course, protested against by many people and organizations around the world, but with no result. This incident did, however, open Great Britain's eyes to the situation for homosexuals in its few remaining colonies. We may hopefully see some changes in the legislation pretty soon as it seems quite clear that Britain's colonies, to their surprise, also are bound by the international treaties signed by the mother country.

Why did the cruise ship want to dock there in the first place? Well, maybe they mistook Cayman Islands for Gayman Islands. :-)

According to a posting at GayUniverse, the Cayman Islands is a very religious and homophobic place. It is also very expensive (for the Caribbean?) and there is no public transport. All this does not seem to make this British colony a suitable place for gay travellers to spend their money.
