The town is on the edge of the Great Dividing Range, where the foothills and iron-bark forests give way to flat farming lands to the West. Eaglehawk is steeped in gold-mining history. This is reflected in the club bannerette of an eagle perched upon a 'poppet' head, this being the tower erected over the mine-shaft. Many of these today are preserved and many can be seen in the area.
