What if the principle of the BCS was

applied to History?

Otherwise known as what happens when sports fans with Ph.D.’s in History have either a) too much time on their hands, or b) are procrastinating from grading finals.

Lisa Beckenbaugh deserves the original credit for this wonderful application of the BCS. It probably came from being subjected to one too many anti-BCS rant from her husband Terry.

This started on our Fantasy Football League bulletin board, but I moved it here so it could be shared further.

Future contributions welcome!

BCS DECLARES GERMANY WINNER OF WORLD WAR II:

US Ranked 4th

Lisa Beckenbaugh

After determining the Big-12 championship game participants the BCS computers were put to work on other major contests and today the BCS declared Germany to be the winner of World War II.

"Germany put together an incredible number of victories beginning with the annexation of Austria and the Sudetenland and continuing on into conference play with defeats of Poland, France, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Belgium and the Netherlands. Their only losses came against the US and Russia; however considering their entire body of work––including an incredibly tough Strength of Schedule––our computers deemed them worthy of the #1 ranking."

Questioned about the #4 ranking of the United States the BCS commissioner stated "The US only had two major victories––Japan and Germany. The computer models, unlike humans, aren't influenced by head-to-

head contests––they consider each contest to be only a single, equally-weighted event."

German Chancellor Adolph Hiter said "Yes, we lost to the US; but we defeated #2 ranked France in only 6 weeks." Herr Hitler has been criticized for seeking dramatic victories to earn 'style points' to enhance Germany's rankings. Hitler protested "Our contest with Poland was in doubt until the final day and the conditions in Norway were incredibly challenging and demanded the application of additional forces."

The French ranking has also come under scrutiny. The BCS commented "

France had a single loss against Germany and following a preseason #1 ranking they only fell to #2."

Japan was ranked #3 with victories including Manchuria, Borneo and the Philippines.

That might possibly have been the best post in the history of the LCFFL..and certainly the best BCS related post. Point for the lady.

BCS robs Britain of Championship Aspirations

Derek Blakeley

The BCS has clearly shafted British hopes at the World Championship.

Clearly the German strength of schedule is overrated. The loaded up on weak I-AA teams like Poland and Norway early on–why did they postpone their traditional showdown with Russia for two years. And then lose. And to give them credit for beating France!?! What was the committee thinking? They have been overrated–#2!!–for decades and are still living off the reputation of old Coach Napoleon who retired years ago. I mean who have they beat since 1810?

After firing Coach Chamberlain, the British rallied around

Coach Churchill, stopped their losing streak and then started turning their season around with hard fought success in North Africa and Burma. But do people remember those games? No. Not when the Americans start running up gaudy scores in late season routsafter sitting on their duffs for the first half of the season.

And who would put the Japanese at number 3!! Their schedule was even worse than the Germans. The Dutch East Indies? Manchuria? Since when has the EAAC (East Asian Athletic conference) ever been seen as a legitimate league? At best they deserve to play in the Rice Bowl.

Once again, this only goes to show the need for a proper playoff.
