Surf boats, being transported on the way to
the West coast of Africa. The boats were built
at H B Hornby boatbuilders, where I worked in
the early years of the war
In 1944 took a radio course and joined the
Merchant Navy as 3rd radio officer.
after the war I changed jobs to ships carpenter
as there was not a need for three operators
in peacetime
In the early days of the war,
I joined the Local defence volunteers
I am not seen in any of the following photos
But they do show what the unit is all about
The name was changed later to The Home Guard
This photo shows the home guard with a
machine gun mounted on a trailer, which was
towed by their own vehicle
It was not unusual for a member
to take home his weapons
Here is a photo of one man cleaning
hisTommy gun on the kitchen table
Training exercises were done on a
regular basis This one is at a railway station
similar to Bidston
Here are a group of local defence
volunteers {LDV} on parade no uniforms yet
It was about a month before they got them
Another group on parade no uniforms
but have been issued rifles
