Mrs. Peter Redding Tent No. 83 History

Mrs. Peter Redding Tent No. 83, Ashland, Ohio, was instituted April 30, 1926, by the Ohio Department President Millicent Young. There were 40 charter members. The Tent was organized through the efforts of Mary B. Mitchell Tent No. 40 members Bertha May Droz and Minnie Cook.

Tent No. 83 was named in memory of the wife of GAR member Peter Redding who owned the meeting hall and who befriended the Tent many times. Assisting at the institution were members of Tent No. 40, who presented the Tent with silk color bearer flags.

The very next year the Tent received the Ohio Department award for the most new members, 62. The Tent developed a Fife and Drum Corps and wore red, white, and blue uniforms. They performed at many district, state, and national conventions. By 1935 the Tent members purchased the hall in which they met. It became known as the Grand Army of the Republic Hall and was a memorial to the Grand Army of the Republic. For as long as any GAR member was alive they were entertained at dinners at the Hall.

They have continued to present flags to schools, Boy Scout groups, historical societies, and churches. Members have served in district, state, and national DUVCW offices.

The Tent is very interested in new members and invites any female who is a direct, lineal descendant of a Union Civil War veteran to contact the Tent for membership.
