Olive L. Howald (Bayliss) - Founder
1 John J. Howald, OH, D: before Feb. 12, 1926. MARRIED: Sarah Jane "Jennie" Elwood, B: 1845, PA. J. Howald served in the Civil War. as a 4th Corporal in Co. E, 13th O.V.I. and was discharged Aug. 18, 1861, at Massillon, OH. He worked as a molder at Russell & Co. The family lived at 30 Akron St., Massillon. CHILDREN:
1-1 Olive L. Howald, "Ollie", B: Dec. 20, 1869, OH, D: before June 25, 1945, Bur: she may be buried in the Navarre, OH Cem. Olive attended Prairie College. She became a stenographer with Russell & Co., in July, 1887. Russell & Co. manufactured farm equipment and many of the original members' families were employed there. MARRIED: James M. a name="Bayliss">Bayliss, after 1889. James worked as a clerk at Russell & Co. They lived at 60 E. Main St. in 1895.

Bertha Mae Martin - Founder
1-0-0-0-0-0-0- Orlando Martin, B: 1832, D: July 2, 1912, Bur: Massillon OH Cem. MARRIED: Martha J. ?, B: Sept. 17, 1836, D: Jan. 28, 1898, Bur: Massillon OH Cem. Mr. Martin served in the Civil War in Co. A, 19th O.V.I. and Co. B, 7th V.R.G. from Sept. 2, 1862 to June 30, 1865, discharged as a 1st Sergeant. He became a member of Massillon's Hart Post, G.A.R., May 11, 1883. He worked as a carpenter in 1883, and as a janitor in 1895. CHILDREN:
1-1-0-0-0-0-0- John H. Martin, B: Sept. 19, 1857, D: Dec. 7, 1900, Bur: Massillon Cem. John worked as a carpenter at Russell & Co., then as a letter carrier in 1895. CHILDREN:

Bertha worked as a dressmaker in 1887 and later became the first General Secretary to Massillon's YWCA. The family lived at 36 Duncan St. and 39 W. Tremont St. in the late 1880s, and at 92 Park St. in 1895.

Harriet McClain Knapp (Merwin) - Founder
1 Shepherd M. Knapp, B: 1835-1836, OH, D: Nov., 1912, Bur: Massillon, OH Cem. MARRIED: Barbara S. Anderson, B: 1838, Scotland. Mr. Knapp served in the Civil War in Co. E, 104th O.V.I., from Aug. 9, 1862 to June 17, 1865, discharged as a Captain. He was one of the founders, in 1868, of Hart Post, G.A.R., in Massillon. He worked as a machinist, then later owned Knapp & Dillon, a plumbing and gas fitting company. The family lived at 102 Prospect St. in 1889, then 303 E. Main St. in the mid 1890s. CHILDREN:

Frances Lee Merwin (Crawford) - Founder
1 Joseph K. Merwin, B: 1833, Philadelphia, PA, D: May 7 or 8, 1929. MARRIED: Emma ?, B: c.1839, OH. Mr. Merwin served in the Civil War in Co. A, 13th O.V.I., from Aug. 12, 1862 to June 26, 1864, and was the Post Adjutant at Camp Chase, Columbus, OH, discharged as a 1st Lieutenant. He became a member of Massillon's Hart Post, G.A.R., June 24, 1887. Prior to the war he worked as a printer and in 1858 bought the Journal of the Times, an abolitionist paper published in Massillon. After the war he was secretary of the Volcano Furnace Co. and then was associated with the Johns Agency until 1923. The family lived at 47 S. Mill St. in the late 1880s. CHILDREN:
1-1 Myrali B. Merwin, "Myra", B: June 5, 1864, D: Nov. 14, 1942, Bur: Massillon OH Cem. MARRIED: John Edward Johns, before 1890, B: Mar. 3, 1860, D: Apr. 16, 1927, Bur: Massillon OH Cem. John's parents and other family members will be added in a separate section. John was an insurance and real estate agent and was the Secretary and Treasurer of the National Mutual Building & Lending Association. In 1895 he was the Secretary of the People's Building & Loan Co.
  Myra was a member of Daughters of Veterans. They lived at 82 Plum St. in 1895, and had at least one child by May, 1890. CHILDREN:

Minnie F. King - Founder and Nellie King (Aimer)
1 Valentine R. King, B: 1835, Berks Co., PA, D: May 13, 1887, Bur: Massillon OH Cem. MARRIED: Mary E. ?, B: 1846, OH, D: just before Feb. 4, 1901, Bur: Massillon OH Cem. Mr. King served in the Civil War in Co. A., 107th O.V.I., from Oct. 11, 1862 to July 10, 1865, discharged as a Corporal. He was a member of Massillon's Hart Post G.A.R., and later worked as a grain buyer, then as a clerk in the Post Office. CHILDREN:
1-1 Charles G. King, B: c.1865, OH, D: after 1952. MARRIED: Josephine W. ?, Dec. 12, 1892, B: Aug., 1873. Charles worked as a printer at Newstetter & Atwater, as a clerk with James R. Dunn, then as Secretary of the Massillon Loan & Building Co. The family lived at 133 E. Oak St. in the mid 1890s. CHILDREN:

1-2 Minnie F. King, B: 1868, OH, D: May 15, 1891, of "throat trouble". Bur: Massillon OH Cem. Minnie was sick with Quinsy during the Census of 1880. She was a teacher at the W. Tremont Street School from 1887 until she died, and lived with her family at 60 Park St., then later, 62 Park St. She was the First President of Massillon Daughters of Veterans (which eventually became DUVCW), serving June, 1885 through December, 1885.
1-3 Nellie "Nelle" King, B: c.1871, OH, D: Mar., 1950. MARRIED: James B. Aimer between 6-1-1894 and 12-7-1894. Nellie worked as a teacher in 1889. Nellie was among the first 14 original members of the Founding Tent, Mrs. Major McKinley Tent No. 1, Massillon, OH, taking the obligation June 14, 1885. She signed the original charter December 12, 1885. Nellie was National President of DUVCW for two years. Nellie was elected National President September, 1892. The 4th National Convention was held in Indianapolis, IN, September, 1893. This convention adopted December 12th as the birthday of our order. Nellie was re-elected National President in 1893. The 5th National Convention was held in Pittsburgh, PA, September, 1894. James was the assistant superintendent at the Prudential Co. in 1895. They lived at 20 McLain St. in 1895. Nellie and her husband moved to Flatbush, Long Island, N.Y., then to Brooklyn, N.Y. where she lived at the time of her death.

1-2 DePary Montague Merrell, Sr., B: 1839, OH, D: 1903, Bur: Massillon Cem.; MARRIED: Mary McLaughlin, B: 1841, Scotland, D: Oct. 11, 1934, Bur: Massillon Cem. DePary served in the Civil War in Co. A, 162nd, O.V.I., from May 2, 1864 to Sept. 4, 1864, discharged as a Private. He was a member of Massillon's Hart Post, G.A.R. He worked as a painter and then as the Sexton of the Massillon Cem. The family lived at 727 S. Erie St. CHILDREN:
1-2-1 DePary Montague Merrell, Jr., B: c.Jan., 1860, OH, D: still alive Oct. 11, 1934, MARRIED: Theresa ?. He worked at Russell & Co. and lived at 37 W. South St. in 1895.
1-2-2 Elizabeth Any Merrell, "Any" B: June 22, 1865, D: Mar. 11, 1888, "paralysis of the heart", Bur: Massillon OH Cem., MARRIED: Permar, c1886. Her name appears as Amy, Any, Merrell, Merrel, Merril, Merrill. Any's death certificate reads "Elizabeth" while the middle name is unclear. The newspaper announcement of her death and funeral, and her headstone lists her as "Any Merrill Permar". On the Census of 1870 she is listed as Elizabeth and on the Census of 1880 she is listed as Any. The family name is generally seen as "Merrell". The only listing of Permars found in Massillon were a family with a number of young men who were glass workers in 1889.
1-2-3 Mary A. Merrell, "Mame", B: c.1867-1868, D: 1897, Bur: Massillon Cem., MARRIED: Sherman H. Fox, just before June 18, 1886. Mame was a member of the Daughters of Veterans, and is listed as Mamie Fox on the amended Articles of Incorporation dated July 3, 1886. Sherman worked at the Massillon Cem. in 1889 and lived at 25 Canal St. In 1895 they lived at 727 S. Erie St. CHILDREN:
1-2-3-1 Wilma Fox, D: 1912, Bur: Massillon Cem.
1-2-3-2 Charles Fox, B: July 26, 1892, D: Apr. 6, 1894, Bur: Massillon Cem.
Note: Duncan A. Merrell, had his own florist business in 1895. There is another Duncan A. Merrell in the Merrell family cemetery plot, B: July 7, 1863, OH, D: Sept. 18, 1864, Bur: Massillon Cem.
Ernest W. or E. Merrell, B: c.1875, OH, D: still alive Oct. 11, 1934. He worked at his brother's (Duncan A.) florist business in 1895.
A granddaughter of DePary Merrell, Sr. was a member of Daughters of Veterans: Pearl Merrell, B: c.1896.
There was another person living in Ansel and Margaret Amy Merrell's household during the Census of 1870: Nellie Merrell, B: c.1856, PA, dressmaker.

1 Emmet A. Stevens, B: Apr., 1839, OH, D: before Feb. 12, 1926; MARRIED: Mary ?, B: June, 1846, OH. Emmet served in the Civil War in Co. I, 76th O.V.I., Oct. 22, 1861 to Oct. 26, 1864, discharged as a Sergeant. He became a member of Massillon's Hart Post, G.A.R., Feb. 11, 1887. He worked as a machinist. CHILDREN:
1-1 Olivia Stevens, "Levo", "Lou", B: Feb., 1868, OH, D: Aug. 22, 1940, Bur: Seattle, Washington, MARRIED: George W. Kinne, Dec. 11, 1926 in Kent, OH, moving directly to Mercer Island, Seattle, Washington.
1-2 Maud Stevens, B: Nov., 1869, OH, D: after Dec. 8, 1952, MARRIED: George W. Kinne, between Dec. 12, 1943 and Dec. 8, 1952. She lived in East Sound, WA. She sometimes signed her name as Maude.
1-3 William Ansel Stevens, B: June, 1871. Presented Levo in marriage on Dec. 11, 1926.
1-4 Charles H. Stevens, B: July, 1873.
