History of Founding Tent

Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War, 1861-1865, was founded May 30, 1885, in Massillon, Ohio by five teenaged girls - Frances Merwin, Harriet Knapp, Eva Merwin, Olive Howald, and Bertha Martin. DUVCW was incorporated in the State of Ohio December, 12, 1885, and is a national organization devoted to veterans, patriotic, educational, and charitable activities. DUVCW is federally chartered.
The Founding Tent, Mrs. Major McKinley Tent No. 1, is seeking new members. DUVCW is open to females, eight and older, who are direct, lineal descendants of Union Civil War soldiers.
Mrs. Major McKinley Tent No. 1 is proud to have developed a museum in the American Legion Post 221 building in Massillon, Ohio. The museum is devoted to the Civil War, the Grand Army of the Republic, and the founding and development of DUVCW. The museum also has displays of various historical items, and a display devoted to President William McKinley who assisted our Tent in incorporating in the State of Ohio. We also have various artifacts from the former GAR Posts located in Massillon, Ohio.
Members of our Tent have participated in Memorial Day services at Massillon, Ohio continuously since 1886. We also participate in a variety of other activities related to veterans affairs, contribute to a number of charities, and try to be involved in as many activities as possible related to the Civil War and veterans. Five members of our Tent have been National President. Many members have been Department President (state-level.)
We meet monthly at 11:00am (Ashley's Restaurant, Hotel McKinley, Canton, Ohio), March - December.
