Greetings from Cassy of Wolf's Rock!

I am happy to share with both new and experienced SCA campers the ideas Aurthour Augestyne and I have used to give our camp a more period appearance, make it more comfortable, and make it easier to pack, load and set up.

Our camp at Lilies War XIV
won the "best period encampment" award.

These tips are things we have learned during the process of building our SCA camp. You may need to adapt some of the ideas to make them work for you,
or just ignore those that don't fit your camping style.

We practice what I call "SCA-style" camping, not strict period-style camping. We use period equipment and materials where possible, but we also use modern items that make camping more comfortable (futon mattress) or a bit safer (fire extinguisher). We hide modern items so our camp has a period appearance.

Our camp changes depending on the location and duration of the event. At a cold-weather event like Gulf Wars in Trimaris, we bring our portable firepit. For weekend events, we bring a smaller version of our camp. You will probably find that you adjust your packing list a bit for different events, also.

For SCA camping, you need food, clothing and shelter. And you need to pack them.
You can follow the links to view each of these topics. Here's what you'll find:

  • some basic ideas for newcomers;
  • our best idea in each category;
  • a list of tips, hints and ideas (updated periodically);
  • links to the home page, to each topic, and to the top of each page.

About the author: Cassy of Wolf's Rock is a 13th century English lady. She has given her favor to Lord Aurthour Augestyne, who bears it into battle as a Fyrdman of Calontir. Cassy makes linen garb, designs medieval furniture for Aurthour to build, and assists Aurthour in his homebrewing endeavors. Cassy also teaches a RUSH class in SCA camping, and particularly enjoys refining and improving their camp.

Cassy's modern-day counterpart is Sandy King, who is a doctoral student in advertising at the University of Missouri-Columbia. She and her partner, Dan Knight (Aurthour's counterpart), enjoy searching flea markets, antique stores, and the internet for items to decorate their medieval-themed house. (Yes, you read that correctly. Our last names are "King" and "Knight.")
