My professional interests focus on the application to both research and clinical practice of the Duncanian theory of addictions, which is also known as the self medication hypothesis. The policy implications of the Duncanian approach are reflected in the policy statement "A Public Health Approach to Mitigating the Negative Consequences of Illicit Drug Abuse" that was adopted by the American National Association on Public Health Policy in 1999.
